A group of critically acclaimed writers of diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds will read from their works during the annual “Voices of the Rainbow: Celebrating the Oral Tradition” series at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus from February 11-April 19.
The program features dynamic presentations of poetry and fiction from authors Susan Choi, Merle Collins, Sandra Maria Esteves, Colum McCann, Michael Thomas and Patrick Rosal. Started in 1993, the series is funded by the Office of the Provost and is free and open to the public.

February 11, 12 p.m., in the Health Services Building, Room 119, enjoy Brooklyn-based writer Michael Thomas, winner of the 2009 prestigious International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for “Man Gone Down,” a novel that focuses on four increasingly desperate days in the life of an unnamed African-American narrator living in Brooklyn.
February 22, 11 a.m., in the Health Services Building, Room 121, featured will be Merle Collins & Sandra Maria Esteves. Born in Grenada, Merle Collins is a poet and fiction writer whose works include the novel “Angel” and the poetry collection “Lady in a Boat.” Sandra Maria Esteves, known as the “Godmother of Nuyorican Poetry,” is a celebrated poet and visual artist.
