Easy Riders Roll Through Billyburg

Amid the Pool Parties, kickball games, and upscale bowling matches happening in Northside Williamsburg on Sunday, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts rolled up to North 14th Street for the 6th Annual Works Engineering Motorcycle Show.

Works Engineering (168 N. 4th Street), hosted the popular showcase featuring hundreds of vintage and custom fabricated motorcycles, to the delight of gearheads throughout Brooklyn.Though it is difficult to say how many motorcycle riders live in Brooklyn, fabrication and repair shop owners say their numbers are growing, especially among the younger population.

“One of the reasons why a lot of young people want to ride especially in an urban environment is means for transportation,” said Valerie Figarella. of Motor Grrl (117 Metropolitan Ave).“Not only for utilitarian reasons, but to go to the beach, get out of town, and have some freedom to go to a watering hole in the Catskills. Once you ride out of the city its a different riding experience.”

The popularity of Harley Davidsons,Suzukis, Hondas and other hogs among young riders was clearly evident as a diverse crowd of motorcyclists revved up their engines and boasted about their choppers to anyone who would listen. Scores of admirers gathered around vintage Triumphs fixed up by Works Engineering’s Erik Green, and asked owners questions about a new brand of quiet battery powered choppers that emit almost nonoise.

Though the wheeze and grumble of a hog is half the fun, isn’t it? For more information about Works Engineering, visit http://www.worksengineering.com/ or call 718-599-1936.
