Want to know Where to GO today and during the week? Here are some can’t-miss ideas!
SATURDAY
Sept. 21
Walk through history
Brooklyn Poets founder Jason Woo will lead a guided walk through the heart of historic Brooklyn Heights in the build-up to the Brooklyn Book Festival. Discover the area’s rich literary history by strolling past the building where Walt Whitman printed the first edition of “Leaves of Grass,” the house where Truman Capote lived while he completed “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood,” and Norman Mailer’s one-time residences.
Step off at 4 pm in front of the High Street A and C station at Cadman Plaza West. www.brooklynpoets.org. Free.
SUNDAY
Sept. 22
Beer-ded gals
Who said beer was just for men?
Thirsty women can compare taste tips and hone their hops knowledge while sipping brewskis when Beerded Ladies, Sixpoint, and Bitter & Esters present a ladies’ pint night at Atlantic Co. On tap will be a women-brewed flight special, live lady disc jockeys, back-room poker with feminist playing cards, and gallons of beer to drink. So get to the bar and drink like a woman!
Atlantic Co. [622 Washington Ave. between Pacific and Dean streets in Prospect Heights, (718) 622–0026, www.atlanticcobar.com]. Free admission.
MONDAY
Sept. 23
Garage pops
Bushwick’s the Denzels belt out pop-garage hooks at a loud enough volume to agitate but with enough melody to woo. “I pay rent so I can have an apartment not so I can listen to you guys rip off Blink-182, Interpol, and Jets of Brazil,” an agitated neighbor wrote to them once, according to their Tumblr.
Glasslands [289 Kent Avenue near S. Second Street in South Williamsburg, www.theglasslands.com] at 8:30 pm. $10.
TUESDAY
Sept. 24
World of BBQ
Brooklyn Brainery will bring the cookout into the classroom with a Masters of Social Gastronomy lecture, designed to blow the lid off the rites — and wrongs — of slow cooking generous hunks of fatty meat. Trace BBQ’s time-honored roots in Spanish barbacoa to massive Southern meat pits and the modern day backyard weenie roast. The know-how smorgasbord will include regional primers, including run-throughs of the sauces of the Carolinas and Austin’s brisket battles, and food duels pitting pork against beef.
Brooklyn Kitchen [100 Frost St. between Meeker and Manhattan avenues in DUMBO (347) 292-7246, www.thebrooklynkitchen.com] at 6:30 pm. $5
FRIDAY
Sept. 20
Party like it’s 1999!
It was 20 years ago this week that we first got to see the life of Cory Matthews on the small screen, when the sitcom “Boy Meets World” made its TV debut. The Bell House will commemorate the relationship of Cory and Topanga, Shawn’s never-ending series of blunders, and all that great advice from Mr. Feeney, with a mix of the best pop, rock, hip-hop and R&B from the 1990s.
The Bell House [149 Seventh St. between Second and Third avenues in Gowanus, (718) 643-6510, www.thebellhouseny.com] at 11 pm. Free admission.
