A two-alarm fire burned through a Bedford-Stuyvesant post office on the morning of June 5.
The blaze broke out at a United States Post Office facility at 609 Myrtle Ave. just after 6 a.m. and spread to the parking garage, according to the FDNY.
More than 100 firefighters arrived on the scene to discover thick smoke in the basement of the five-story building, which has apartments on the top four floors.
Department members called in a special vent truck to help alleviate the choking smoke in the building, and quickly knocked down the main body of the fire using three hose lines and the building’s built-in sprinkler system. The facility was empty at the time of the blaze, and no injuries were reported.
According to city records, 609 Myrtle Ave. has racked up a number of violations – mostly relating to construction and goings-on at the residential units above the post office. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
