Grass is blue-er

Yee-haw! James Reams and the Barnstormers will kick off the Park Slope Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Jamboree tonight with some down-home finger-picking banjo playin’. Your hoots and hollers will be recorded for posterity, because a documentary film crew will capture the night. Come back on Saturday for workshops and more music!

Sept. 16

Shooting the president

Pete Souza, the former White House photographer for Presidents Reagan and Obama, will stop by Dumbo this afternoon for Photoville festival. He will discuss 10 of the photos he shot during the Obama administration, and how each captures a particular aspect of the Obama presidency, and the reactions they inspired.

Booked up

The Brooklyn Book Festival takes over Downtown today — but reading is so hard! All those little letters — ugh! Take a break from the written word at the “I’m Gonna Live Forever: Fame and Its Discontents” panel featuring Park Slope musician Jonathan Coulton (pictured) chatting with two cartoonists (yay, pictures!) about the lives of famous people.

King of science: Neil deGrasse Tyson and Whoopi Goldberg will take the Kings Theatre stage on Sept. 18 for “StarTalk Live.”

Seeing stars

The stars will be out of the sky and in the Kings Theatre tonight at StarTalk Live, the in-person version of the space and science podcast from astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Tonight’s show will feature comedian co-host Eugene Mirman and special guests Whoopi Goldberg and Michael Ian Black.

Hop to ‘It’

The latest iteration of “It” has gotten some good reviews, but Stephen King has suffered some serious stinkers among the 92 film and television adaptations of his work. Tonight, video variety show “Kevin Geeks Out” will celebrate some of those lesser-known titles, such as “Lawnmower Man” (pictured), “Sleepwalkers,” and “Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return.”
