Swamp stomp

The Jalopy Theatre’s annual festival of Cajun, Creole, and zydeco music, Bayou ’n’ Brooklyn, is back May 8–10, with live performances from local and visiting acts at night and workshops on how to play the fiddle, accordion, and guitar in the day. There will also be a jambalaya and cornbread supper on Saturday to fuel a long night of dancing.

8:30 pm at the Jalopy Theatre [315 Columbia St. between Hamilton Avenue and Woodhull Street in Red Hook, (718) 395-3214, www.bayou-n-brooklyn.com]. $20–$50.

Solder on

Forget flowers and chocolate — give mom the gift of seamlessly-fused steel this Mother’s Day with a welding class at the Navy Yard. Welder Susan Woods will lead mother and offspring duos through a hands-on metal fabrication workshop with a “spring garden” theme.

3 pm at Brooklyn Navy Yard, Bldg 92 (Flushing Avenue at Carlton Avenue in Fort Greene, www.bldg92.org). $60.

Pen-ny ante

As if becoming a professional writer isn’t enough of a financial gamble, some scribes choose to become actual gamblers. The Brooklyn Historical Society will host a panel of writers who also play professional poker, including Matt Matros (“The Making Of A Poker Player”) Jennifer Shahade (“Chess B—-“), and the Awl editor Choire Sicha.

Celebrate good times: Dance the night away in Brooklyn Bridge Park at the Celebrate Brooklyn! Dance Parties, kicking off May 14.

Old souls

The first of this year’s waterfront Celebrate Brooklyn! Dance Parties will be a soul extravaganza. Local institution Felix Hernandez will bring his long-running Rhythm Revue party, getting the party started by spinning classic Motown, Stax, and Philly tracks. Then old-school Minnesota soul singer and showman Sonny Knight and his funky backing band the Lakers will play live.

7 pm at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Harbor View Lawn (Furman Street at Old Fulton Street in Dumbo, www.bricartsmedia.org). Free.

In from the Pelican State: Accordion player and vocalist Jesse Lege is one of many Louisiana musicians who will be at the Jalopy Theatre for the Bayou ‘n’ Brooklyn festival, May 8–10.
