Kick off the Coney Island Film Festival with a shimmy and a shake by catching its first screening: “Obscene Beauty,” a documentary about New York’s neo-burlesque scene, featuring local figures including the World Famous *Bob* (pictured), Nasty Canasta, and Go-Go Harder. Afterwards, hit the opening party at the Freak Bar downstairs ($25).

“X-Files” actor David Duchovny discusses his third novel “Miss Subways,” inspired by the subway-themed beauty contest that lasted from the 1940s to the ’70s. Tonight’s reading, in a dis-used subway station, will also display posters, photos, and safety campaigns from the long-running campaign.
