On Sunday, the Brooklyn Arts Council presents
a free marathon of folk dance featuring the borough’s own nimble
artists. For four hours, dancers will move across Brooklyn College’s
Whitman Theater stage; among the dozen pieces on the program
will be Panamanian social dances such as the "cumbia"
and "punta" by Conjunto Nuevo Milenio (pictured); Brooklyn
uprocking by Ralph Casanova a.k.a. "King Uprock"; West
African stilt-walking with Vado Diomande; and Israeli folk dance
by Paraparim.
Audience members who find the performances inspiring can learn
the tricks of the trade at free "Folk Feet Dance Workshops"
– featuring Puerto Rican bomba, American square dance, Ivory
Coast dance and Polish American folk dance – at the Brooklyn
Public Library’s Central branch in Grand Army Plaza on March
5, from 1 to 5 pm.
Brooklyn Arts Council’s "Folk Feet: Celebrating Traditional
Dance in Brooklyn" will be performed on Feb. 26, from 2
