FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS

FRIENDS &

Red Hook has
recently been the inspiration for a number of artists in a variety
of media.

Next month, Thomas Dunne Books will publish the novel "Red
Hook," written by Gabriel Cohen, and set among the gritty
streets and history of this working-class neighborhood. On display
now in Red Hook’s Community Gallery is an exhibition of the faces
of the people who make a difference in this portion of South
Brooklyn.

"Portraits of a Neighborhood" is Audrey Frank Anastasi’s
series of paintings at the Community Gallery (Independence Community
Bank, 498 Columbia St. at Lorraine Street) which can be viewed
now through Sept. 29.

Anastasi has fashioned these mixed-media portraits of "inspiring
members of the Red Hook community" including Shona Bowers
(left) of the community-service organization Americorps.

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 3:30
pm; Friday, 8:30 am to 7 pm; and Saturday, 8:30 am to 1 pm. For
more information, call (718) 768-0305. The exhibition is free.
