Holy cats and dogs!
Brooklynites brought their furry friends to New Utrecht Reformed Church in Bensonhurst on Saturday afternoon to receive blessings from Pastor E.J. Emerson. The event was a special one not for the animals, but also for their two-legged owners, according to one attendee.
“His health isn’t as good as it used to be, he can’t really walk, his eyesight is poor,” said Kim Russo of her 14-year-old Pug, Mio. “At this stage in his life, any blessing just to help him.”
Pastor Emerson spent about 10 minutes with Mio, according to Russo, and wished him a long and healthy life. She also blessed another pup who was recovering from a recent procedure to remove plastic from his stomach after he snacked on part of a Frisbee, and his slightly exasperated owner was thankful for the pastor’s well wishes.
“I need all the help I can get with him,” Peter Turk said of Lemmy, his 10-month-old rascal. “He’s a bull terrier, so he’s kind of strong-willed.”
Human attendees also snacked on the baked goods that were for sale to benefit the restoration of the church, which the pastor said was erected in 1828.
