’ As part of BAMcinematek’s film series,
"Gena Rowlands: An Independent Spirit," the acclaimed
actress will participate in audience Q&As following the screenings
of John Cassavetes’ films "A Woman Under the Influence"
on Nov. 10 and "Opening Night" on Nov. 12.
Rowlands starred in both films, which are directed by her husband,
Cassavetes, and received an Oscar nomination for her performance
in 1974’s "A Woman Under the Influence," about a wife
descending into madness. The Q&A that follows Thursday’s
7:30 pm screening will be moderated by director-author Peter
Bogdanovich ("The Last Picture Show").
"Opening Night," which includes Ben Gazzara and Cassavetes
in the cast, is a play-within-a-play featuring Rowlands as Broadway
star Myrtle Gordon, an actor who finds it hard to carry on after
witnessing the death of a fan. Rowlands will participate in a
just-added Q&A after the 6 pm screening.
Among the highlights of the series, which continues through Nov.
20, is Cassavetes’ 1980 film "Gloria," which showcases
Rowlands in the role of a streetwise New Yorker (pictured) harboring
a child whose parents are murdered by the mob. "Gloria"
will be screened on Nov. 11.
BAMCinematek is located at 30 Lafayette Ave. at Ashland Place
