Green looks good on the Gowanus

Area environmentalists took fun-filled steps towards living an eco-friendly lifestyle during the Gowanus Canal Conservancy’s first annual “Gowanus Goes Green” festival.

Featuring musical entertainment and refreshments from area merchants, budding ecologists along Carroll Street took part in environmentally-friendly activities such as learning about green roofs and NYC’s first green spa, and perusing through an assortment of natural bags, toys, and organic T-shirts.

While children took part in yoga classes on the historic Carroll Street Bridge, had their faces painted and created free arts and crafts projects with discarded materials, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection’s skimmer vessel, Jamaica Bay, cruised the waters in an effort to remove debris and floatables from the surface of the canal.
