Four Greenpoint families were left homeless by a fire that raged through an apartment building on Wednesday night, fire officials said.
The blaze on Hausman Street between Nassau and Meeker avenues started just after 8 pm on Wednesday, according to the FDNY. Firefighters got the blaze under control at 9:54 pm, but by then an entire section of the complex had been gutted, according to a neighbor.
“The back of the building was so engulfed and the whole back of the building is destroyed,” said Robert Mcerlean, who lives across the street and is the president of the Hausman Street Block Association. “At least everyone got out safe.”
The Red Cross gave emergency funds to three of the four families, a spokesman for the organization said.
The Fire Department is looking into what caused the conflagration.
