Talk about getting a spring in your step.
Foodies are rejoicing that the seasonal Greenpoint Food Market returns to the Church of the Messiah on Russell Street on Saturday — and this month’s version will feature 45 vendors offering treats on the theme, “Spring Awakening.”
But instead of sexually frustrated teenagers expressing themselves in musical form, Greenpoint’s do-it-yourself foodie entrepreneurs will hawk chocolate truffles, cupcakes, kombucha, patchouli, beef jerky, and all manner of baked goods in the shape of flowers.
Cobra Pate will have a log of vegan pate entitled “Wasabi Sunflower,” Mombucha will offer tasty homemade kombucha, a fermented tea, and Milk Made will scoop out a special ice cream flavor made just for the market.
This month’s line-up is the biggest by far, said manager Joann Kim, whose personal favorites include Anarchy in a Jar jams, bacon marmalade, and a shot or two of whatever the heck the Green Pirate Juice Truck is grinding up.
Many come for the food, of course, but others stay for the music. Greenpoint’s own Cowboy Mark will be at the DJ booth mixing 1950s and ’60s rock, while the hip-hop/soul/funk/jazz-samba styling’s of People’s Champs will take the stage at 2 pm.
“Women should wear their spring dresses, men should wear their spring dresses, and everyone should rock out in their rockabilly best,” said Kim.
With all the vendors crammed inside the gym, you may find it difficult to fight the urge to head outside to McGolrick Park and enjoy the beautiful weather. Waiting for you there will be vendors selling pork buns and empanadas made on the premises.
Now that’s a summer city tradition arriving a few months early.
