Spring is in the air!
Earth Day comes to Greenpoint for the third year in a row, as Town Square returns to McCarren Park on April 25 to celebrate the holiday with an array of family-friendly events.
This year, the community organization is sponsoring several contests for environmentally-themed artwork, writing, and design, in addition to scores of vendors of green products, services and educational organizations available to North Brooklyn residents.
The Go Green! Greenpoint! Earth Day Festival announced an “Art Challenge” open for all ages to submit artworks “exploring enviro-subjects, applying enviro-designs,” and/ or using enviro-materials” which must be brought to the festival by 11 am on Sunday, April 25. Submissions will be displayed during the festival and the winner will have an opportunity to answer questions about his or her work.
For students ages 7 to 18, the festival is sponsoring a writing contest on the topic of Earth Day, which could include short stories, essays, historical documents, poems, or plays. Winners of the contest will be notified on Wednesday, April 21.
Finally, there is a science contest for all ages to submit “projects, inventions and practical designs” that will green Greenpoint and Williamsburg. The projects could be an invention or research to reconsider a greener way of doing things. Science contest submissions must be brought to Go Green! Greenpoint!
“It’s a great way to be part of the community and to be a part of the Earth Day celebrations,” said Town Square President Susan Anderson. “In doing so, it will help people learn about the environment and live a more green life.”
Science and art contest entry forms must be e-mailed to amy@townsquareinc.com by Sunday, April 18 while writing contest forms must be e-mailed by Friday, April 9th.
