The team had 32 kills in just three playoff matches last season and has improved after a winter spent playing with the Creole club program.

“She’s really jumping off the ground now,” Lenzi said. “She can hit anything in the air.”

The girl getting them the ball was not instrumental last year — in fact, she wasn’t even on the team. Midwood’s setter in 2010 is Elizabeth Genis, who will replace the graduated Anna Aleksandrovskaya. In the back row, the Hornets have defender extraordinaire Geena Bell returning as well as sophomore Veronica Ceselka.

“She’s passing really well,” Lenzi said of Ceselka. “We have a lot of good, strong servers.”

And a lot of players, period. Midwood’s roster stands at 20, among the largest in the PSAL. Lenzi probably already knows who among them will be her stars in 2012.

“There’s always a flow,” she said. “Everybody has a comfort. People just slide in because they’ve been sliding in.”
