The Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) and Kingsborough Community College have formed a partnership to provide low-cost training for small to mid-size contractors and builders who want to earn the green building certification they will need to stay competitive and meet New York City’s PlanNYC 2030 environmental goals.
The Green Advantage Training Program, the nation’s only green certification for contractors recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council, will have its inaugural New York City session May 17 at the Kingsborough Community College, 2001 Oriental Boulevard (Room V202), from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The one-day course, limited to 40 people, will cover principles of sustainable design, constructing a green building, and sustainable building systems.
The open-book certification examination will be given five days later in the evening. The workshop will initially be offered at a special rate of $150, one third of the usual $450 cost, subsidized by workforce development funding from the U.S. Department of Labor.
It is targeted to women, minority-owned (MWBE) contractors, and other small contractors with fewer than 50 employees.
Green Advantage certified construction teams can qualify for one LEED Innovation Credit, which can lead to tax incentives and other competitive advantages. Workforce development has long been a central objective of the City University of New York.
