A manhole exploded in Bergen Beach and sent a sewer cover tearing through a nearby parked car on May 9.
The blast at Avenue L and E. 68th Street was so powerful that a man living three blocks away felt it.
“It shook the house a little,” said John Marghella, who lives on E. 72nd Street.
There were no injuries in the blast.
The boom came at about 10:30 Friday morning and the fire blazed for several hours before being extinguished around 1:30 pm, fire officials said.
Firefighters arrived on the scene immediately but had to cool their heels for hours waiting for utility workers to arrive to switch off the power at the source of electrical fire before dousing the flame, a department spokesman said.
“They don’t exactly come to the scene with sirens and lights flashing,” a department spokesman said.
