Someone called the fuzz!
The Easter Bunny and Bedford-Stuyvesant police officers joined forces to hand out seasonal treats to dozens of kids at Interfaith Medical Center on March 24. The youngsters came to meet the chocolate-distributing rabbit, but an organizer said the event was also a way for them to get to know their local hospital and law enforcement.
“We want to let them know the hospital is a friendly place, not a scary place,” said Interfaith’s Sharonnie Perry. “And also to get kids used to seeing police, because they often only see them on TV.”
The celebrity hare and officers from the 81st Precinct distributed candy and toys to pediatric patients and around 50 visiting first graders from the nearby Brownstone School, and the tykes were thrilled the Easter Bunny took time out of his busy schedule to deliver the goodies.
“It was good,” said Luke Napier. “He gave me an Easter egg!”
The rabbit had the right to remain silent, but the youngsters were delighted that he did not, according to Perry.
“They were excited that they were asking the bunny rabbit question,” she said. “This bunny rabbit talked back!”
The Easter event was also an excuse to celebrate a different kind of resurrection, Perry said — it was a way to let local families know the hospital is still alive and kicking after coming out of bankruptcy a few years ago.
“We still struggle to let people know the hospital is still open,” she said. “We’re at full capacity.”
