Hugh got it! Smartmom’s elusive spouse steps out with photo show
Hugh Crawford

You know him as Hepcat, the brooding, sometimes ornery, sometimes unemployed, husband behind the award-winning Smartmom, but Hugh Crawford is also the Ansel Adams of Brooklyn.

Crawford is stepping out of his role as the elusive spouse for his upcoming photo exhibition of urban Brooklyn and rural California landscapes at the Old Stone House on April 28.

Crawford put together the show, whose title, “Essence and Accident,” is a reference to Aristotle, by sorting through photos he’s been working on for the past few years and finding relationships and themes that link them. You’ve seen some of the photos before in his “No Words Daily Pix” feature on wife Louise Crawford’s “Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn,” but most of them are unique to the exhibit.

When he’s not musing over philosophy and snapping photos around the borough, Crawford works (sometimes) as a freelance computer software programmer — his annoying but necessary “day job.” And, of course, he has the added role of Hepcat — husband to Smartmom and dad to Teen Spirit and the Oh So Feisty One, of course. There’s never a moment’s peace.

Indeed, during an interview, Crawford traded bons mots about Aristotle, nature and Jackson Pollack while Smartmom moved furniture nosily in the background.

“Will you put that down until I’m done?” he yelled in an aside to his wife. “You’re going to hurt yourself!”

Smartdad: Photographer Hugh Crawford — the Hepcat to Louise Crawford’s “Smartmom” — will have an exhibit at the Old Stone House starting on April 28.
