IN THE MARKET

On Aug. 7, a unique flea market celebrated
its grand opening in Red Hook.

Located at 399 Van Brunt St., between Coffey and Van Dyke streets,
the Red Hook Flea Market is open for business Saturdays and Sundays
until Christmas, from 10 am to sunset. The location is an empty
lot loaned by real estate developer Greg O’Connell to Gowanus
resident Trisha Mulligan, who cleaned it out with some help from
friends.

Another friend provided the shipping container (pictured) that
acts as Mulligan’s herb and flower shop at the far end of the
narrow space. An herbalist for 15 years, Mulligan plans to sell
tinctures and dried herbs as well as a line of her own body care
products. She is also a floral designer who will have fresh flowers
and plants for sale.

The floor of the lot is covered with wood chips and a long wood
walkway and arbor runs down the center of the space. The walkway
will be transformed into a runway on Sept. 17, when Mulligan
hosts a "Best in Show" dog show.

Mulligan is also looking for more vendors to sign up and sell
their wares and hopes local artisans will participate. Other
vendors are selling bric-a-brac, artwork and imported goods from
Bali and India. For more information, call Mulligan at (718)
369-1515.
