Sixteen local students have received a total of $30,000 in scholarships given in memory of a pair of community activists.
The students – all graduating high school seniors who either live or attend school in the Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights area – were chosen to receive scholarships distributed by the Kassenbrock Brothers Memorial Scholarship Fund based on their records of community service.
“Community service pays off,” asserted Mary Ann Walsh, the administrator of the scholarship fund.
The scholarship winners were announced at the May meeting of the Bay Ridge Community Council (BRCC), an organization that Vincent and Walter Kassenbrock had founded in 1951 and whose continuing mantra has been community service.
For 2008, the scholarship recipients are Dennis Larkin and Michael Rehberg who attend Xaverian High School; Evangelos Tsevdos, Alexandra Kuvaldina, Brenda Abdulahad, Sarah Gaglio and Barbara Ungiert, who attend Fort Hamilton High School; Jonathan Wlazlowski, who attends Xavier High School; AnnMarie Kennedy, Christine Seikali, Christina Arkous and Vanessa Barris, who attend Fontbonne Hall Academy; Dimitrios Xanthos, George Barker and Natalia Flokiewicz, who attend Brooklyn Technical High School; and Katherine Griffin, who attends Bishop Kearney High School.
The meeting was held at William McKinley Intermediate School, I.S. 259, 7301 Ft. Hamilton Parkway.
