Kingsborough Community College will host the “Dreamland Pavilion: Brooklyn and Development” multidisciplinary conference October 2-3, which will explore the past, present and future of development in Brooklyn.
Kevin Powell, a Brooklyn-based activist, author, poet and entertainer, will deliver the keynote address.Powell has run twice for the United States Congress in Brooklyn’s 10th congressional district and is the author or editor of 10 books, including his new essay collection, Open Letters to America.
The two-day conference brings together more than 50 city planners, academics, journalists, activists and creative artists from New York City and beyond to discuss the meaning of development in Brooklyn.Among the topics speakers will address are major development projects such as the Atlantic Yards and Coney Island, politics, gentrification, the representation of Brooklyn in the media and community activism.
In addition to the more than 20 panels of presentations, the event will feature guided visits to local development sites, creative performances, and an art and design exhibition, The Soul is the Size of Elsewhere. Running now to October 3 in the Kingsborough Community College Art Gallery, the exhibition investigates community and development in our borough from the perspective of four different Brooklyn cultural producers.
