The Brooklyn Aviators fell to the top-ranked 1000 Islands Privateers on Friday, suffering a 4-1 defeat at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center in Alexandria Bay, New York.
The Privateers finally took their revenge — served, as always, up cold — against Brooklyn’s beloved boys of winter, who had enjoyed a 0-2 record against the scurvy scallywags until yesterday.
The Privateers ground away at Brooklyn all night, sinking two pucks into the Aviators’ net before the second buzzer sounded.
Aviator Andrew Scampoli managed to earn a goal in the second after he found the net with assists from Henry Coxe and Steve Koich, but Brooklyn’s upstate rivals were out for blood, giving no quarter for the rest of the game.
Privateer Paul Kelly stole a puck past the Aviators’ net-minder Peter Dundovich eight minutes into the final period, laying the groundwork for 1000 Islander Adam McAllister to cut the head off the chicken in the final minute — scoring moments after Aviators’ coach Rob Miller pulled Dundovich in a failed attempt to salvage the game.
The 1000 Islands Privateers have led the Federal Hockey League for much of the season, but never beat Brooklyn until Friday. Alexandria Bay is now second in the Federal Hockey League’s standings, falling behind the New Jersey Outlaws — a team the Aviators have been unable to beat all season.
