The dancers in Pina Bausch’s "Masurca Fogo" at the
Brooklyn Academy of Music on Nov. 8 made dancing in high heels
seem as safe as the sexy cigarettes held between their slim fingers.
In fact, much of the show was set to songs from K.D. Lang’s album
"Drag," a tribute to the much-maligned addiction. The
gala evening raised $436,000 for BAM, which is dealing with the
city’s budget crunch by giving its employees a week of unpaid
leave.
Guests toted home the rose-filled red pumps (left) that doubled
as centerpieces for the pre-performance dinner. Among the partygoers
were (middle) supermodel Iman and her husband, David Bowie.
The Tanztheater Wuppertal performers, as well as (right) Bausch
and BAM producer Joseph Melillo, joined the audience at the dessert
reception that swelled with the sounds of Bobby Sanabria &
Quarteto Ache.
Laurie Anderson (1999’s "Songs and Stories from Moby Dick")
arrived incognito in street clothes and a backpack and snuck
out soon after the performance as did new BAM chairman of the
board Alan Fishman, president and CEO of Independence Community
Bank Corp. (Former board chairman Bruce Ratner, president and
CEO of Forest City Ratner Companies, stepped down last month.)
