Amid an array of balloons, flowers and well-wishers, Javier Muniz was appointed principal of P.S. 200 at 1940 Benson Avenue.
The celebration was a highlight of last week’s meeting of District 20’s Community Education Council (CEC).
“We’re very honored to do tonight’s appointment,” said CEC President Laurie Windsor.
To celebrate Muniz’s appointment, parents and colleagues shared stories and kind words on his behalf.
“He is determined to lead our school to a new level of excellence,” said Sheila Fisheane, P.S. 200’s United Federation of Teachers (UFT) representative.
Parents called Muniz a “dedicated and caring educator.”
Muniz began his educational career as a paraprofessional. His first administrative job was as an assistant principal at P.S. 20 in Manhattan.
Muniz takes over for Sylvia LaCerra, P.S. 200’s long-time leader. LaCerra is now a member of District 20’s CEC.
“Sylvia LaCerra was one of the most respected educators during her long career in P.S. 200,” Fisheane said. “Replacing her was going to be a challenge for anyone. Javier has demonstrated in just a short few months that he is up to that challenge.”
Muniz was “overwhelmed” by the well wishes.
“I truly appreciate you coming out to celebrate with me,” he said.
Acknowledging LaCerra’s contributions to P.S. 200, Muniz said, “[LaCerra] polished P.S. 200 into one of the brightest jewels in the New York City public school system. Ms. LaCerra – this will always be your home.”
“Although my father is not here today, I know he would be very proud,” Muniz said. “I want to thank my mother. I hope that I am making you proud. I want to thank my beautiful wife and children for being there for me.”
