An “outgoing” Old Mill Basin woman, who was devoted to her family, was immortalized when her community organized a memorial walk in honor of the late Debbie Moss.
The second annual jaunt around Marine Park drew family, friends and even strangers, touched by the plight of the mother of two, who succumbed to ovarian cancer in 1999 at the age of 40.
Moss’s sister, Norine Strazza, said she created the event to commemorate the brave woman, whose daughter Tina helped boost the big-hearted walkers as they put their best foot forward to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS), followed by a ceremony with testimonials from guest speakers.
Survivors manned a commemoration table and distributed T-shirts while participants posted photographs of deceased loved ones on a memorial board.
In addition, Strazza presented an “Outstanding Volunteer” award to Kim Henry, and received a proclamation for her efforts from Borough Hall.
“It’s been a lot easier dealing with Debbie’s death, knowing that I’m helping people, and knowing that she didn’t die in vain,” said the woman, adding that she hoped to triple last year’s proceeds, which raised $10,000 for cancer research.
