Laying the foundation for the BK Greenway

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) will hold its Third Annual benefit — “New Views: Connecting Brooklyn’s Waterfront” — supporting the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, June 25.

Join the Board and supporters of Brooklyn Greenway Initiative for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and live music as the sun sets over New York Harbor. The benefit runs from 6-8 p.m., but the music will continue until 10:30 p.m. for those who wish to extend the evening.

In keeping with Brooklyn Greenway Initiative’s theme of offering new perspectives of Brooklyn’s waterfront, this year’s “New Views” will be held on the waterfront terrace of One Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The Michael Arenella Quartet will kick off the party, followed by the infectious, rousing anthems of the Stumblebum Brass Band.

According to Brian McCormick, BGI co-founder, “The timing could not be better. Guests will experience the opening of a new view plane through the partially — and perhaps fully — demolished pier sheds on Piers 3 and 5.”

Meg Fellerath, BGI co-founder and director of Programs, adds, “Last year we were fortunate to be one of the opening events at East River State Park in Williamsburg, and in 2005, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation hosted our benefit on the top floor of its administration building. We couldn’t ask for better partners.”

“This year,” says Milton Puryear, BGI co-founder and director of Planning, “we are very proud to honor Andrew Kimball, president and CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) at our benefit. BNYDC was an early champion of the Greenway and through its ongoing support we were able to assemble a two-mile section of the Greenway. We will also present a Community Partner of the Year Award to Teresa Toro, Transportation Committee Chair of Community Board 1, which has given the green light for construction of a dedicated bikeway on Kent Avenue and West Street.”

“In addition,” Puryear adds, “we’ll be celebrating the recent announcement by Governor [David] Paterson that Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and our planning partner Regional Plan Association have received a third grant to continue Greenway implementation in Community Boards 1,2 and 6 through the New York State’s Department of State’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.”
