These teachers are at full attention!
Educators from across the city toured Fort Hamilton Army Garrison on March 17 — and learned what it means to really make the grade.
Base personnel brought the teachers through Fort Ham’s housing, shopping, dining, historical and exercise facilities, and gave them an education in what the Army has to offer its students — in terms of benefits, training, and life lessons.
“To us in the Army, education is one of the most important things you can possibly do,” said Colonel Eluyn Gines, the installation’s commander. “The Army is all about education. We teach soldiers the basics in addition to their job or their skill. We then send our soldiers to other schools as they progress through the ranks. Soldiers can earn their college degree while serving in the Army. Think about what education means to us then too.”
School instructors marvelled at the tax-free shopping, spacious subsidized housing, and $170,144 in educational assistance that soldiers stationed at the base can enjoy.
“I learned a lot on this tour,” said Eunice Lyn of the Manhattan-based Urban Action Academy, adding that she would recommend checking the base out to her pupils. “I never saw the Army as having all these benefits, money for college, shopping privileges, etc. There is so much more to it than just going to war, and this visit has really opened my eyes to so much more. Students really need to see this for themselves.”
