Lil’ Mama encourages young readers

Lil’ Mama was in da house %u2013 to take budding bookworms on a record-breaking word journey at the Brooklyn Public Library.

The ebullient rapper from East New York, who attended Edward R. Murrow High School in Midwood, lead an excited group of pre-schoolers in a national day of literacy capped by the reading of Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” at the borough’s central archive at Grand Army Plaza.

Adults across the country read the same book to more than million children and participated in book-related activities as part of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign, presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation to promote the merits of early childhood reading.

Lil’ Mama, whose real name is Niatia Jessica Kirkland grew up in East New York and is a judge on the television show, “America’s Best Dance Crew.”
