Everyone notices what you wear — and they all have something to say about it.

Just read the analysis of the ensemble Michelle Obama wore on Inauguration Day. It supposedly sent more “messages” than my Blackberry.

I read that her gown, too, symbolized “dreams” and “embraced” themes. Talk about pressure.

Okay, so we’re not Michelle Obama. Or her kids. (Did you read that analysis?!) But we know that people do notice our clothing — especially when we have to dress for a special occasion. (Surely you remember what your Aunt Mary said about your cousin Tessie at the last wedding, don’t you? Ooo-la-la.)

The point is that even in a tough economy, we’ve got to splurge on some things. Dressing for a special occasion is definitely one of them. So, if you know that the invitation to that wedding, engagement, prom, or anniversary celebration is expected to arrive in the mail any day now, it’s time to start looking for that new outfit.

Fortunately, you don’t have to travel far. Right in our own neighborhood, inside the Kings Plaza Shopping Mall, is Vera Special Occasion and Wedding Dresses (Flatbush Avenue and Avenue U, 718-258-0797).

There, they have an assortment of styles, colors, and sizes to suit every need and budget. They can also customize anything you like, says Jessica, the shop’s manager. You can shop for all your accessories here as well, as they’ve got jewelry, shoes, and handbags that are so dazzling, you’ll be the talk of the town.

Purple has been an especially attractive color for this winter, says Jessica. It’s the hue many people have chosen to embrace for their special occasions. With spring on its way, she expects that yellow will be the color you’ll see being worn by lots of prom girls, while the trend in bridesmaids’ colors include lavender and burgundy.

She notes that mothers of the brides often want dresses that “have sleeves.” After all, no matter what the weather, it can often be cool inside catering halls. Vera Special Occasion and Wedding Dresses carries a large assortment of these styles. And, if you don’t see something that strikes you instantly, you can have fun browsing through the variety of choices in the many catalogues they carry.

Jessica says that the large department stores are “limited” with the amount of dresses they can carry, but with what you see at their shop and with what’s available via catalogue, there just may be too many beautiful choices from which to choose. The most difficult decision you may have to make is selecting only one dress.

Perhaps just as important, “Our prices are low,” she says. “And our quality is good.” They opened their shop at the Kings Plaza Mall last summer, Jessica says, but they are “still offering” many of the low grand opening prices.

When it comes to brides, expect special treatment.

It’s not unusual to find “four or five workers” helping them, providing the utmost in customer service, Jessica says. “They get careful attention,” she assures.

The sky is the limit when it comes to the selection of bridal gowns as well.

“There are always new styles for brides,” Jessica says, and the gowns are always a perfect fit, too. That’s because they “measure everything — chest, hips, legs, waist,” she says. It’s a “custom-made wedding gown.” When everyone is looking at you, they’ll have nothing but good things to say.

Come to the shop and browse. If you see something you like, they’ll hold it for you for two weeks, with a deposit. Credit cards are also accepted.

Shop Mondays through Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Give everyone something to talk about — a gorgeous you.
