It’s election day — so get out there and vote!
Hurricane Sandy knocked many polling places out of commission, forcing Gov. Cuomo to sign a first-of-its-kind emergency order that will let Brooklynites cast their ballots at polls anywhere in the state.
Voters who exercise their right outside of their district will sign an affidavit and make their choice for the presidential and U.S. Senate races, but not local races.
Poll-goers should remember there’s more than the main event at stake.
Other than the battle for the White House between President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, Brooklynites will have a chance to cast a ballot in some very interesting races:
• Voters in Downtown, Fort Greene, Clinton, Hill, Bedford–Stuyvesant, Canarsie, Mill Basin, Marine Park, Coney Island, and Brighton Beach will decide if Democratic frontrunner Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries will succeed retiring Rep. Ed Towns in a race against Green Party candidate Colin Beavan and Republican hopeful Alan Bellone.
• In Midwood, Republican state Sen. David Storobin faces off against Democrat and former Councilman Simcha Felder, while state Sen. Kevin Parker tries to fend off challenger Mindy Meyer, who is best known for her unconventional campaign website.
• In Bay Ridge, five-term Republican state Sen. Marty Golden goes up against upstart Democrat Andrew Gounardes.
• In Coney Island, Democratic Assemblyman Alec Brook–Krasny fights Republican rival Tom McCarthy.
