Bloodied man dies from gunshot wound after walking into Brownsville hospital seeking help

Brooklyn detectives are investigating a deadly shooting on Wednesday afternoon in which the victim, covered in blood, walked into a local hospital seeking medical help.

Law enforcement sources said an unidentified group of people in a dark-colored sedan dropped off the 45-year-old victim, Oliver Gamaliel of Wyona Street in Brooklyn, at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brownsville at approximately 2:37 p.m. on April 17.

Bleeding from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Gamaliel was pronounced dead by hospital staff just minutes later at 2:46 p.m., police said. 

Police said Gamaliel was apparently shot in front of a smoke shop located at 328 East 98 St. in Brownsville. According to video surveillance, the suspected shooter fled the scene on foot.

No arrests have been made yet, and the investigation remains ongoing. 

Both homicide and shooting incidents are on the rise in the 73rd Precinct, where Gamaliel was shot on Wednesday, per the latest NYPD data. Year-to-date, eight murders have been reported in the precinct, a 166% jump from the same period last year. Shootings have risen 25%, with 15 incidents reported so far this year.
