The holiday spirit was alive and well Friday night at the Hendrick I. Lott House as families gathered despite frigid temperatures for the annual Christmas tree lighting.
Dozens of families turned out to enjoy the festive atmosphere, complete with hot chocolate, cookies, and a special visit from Sinterklaas, the legendary Dutch figure based on Saint Nicholas.
Marine Park community leader Greg Borruso, owner of Marine Park Hardware, emceed the event and led the countdown to light the tree. Assembly Member Jaime Williams had the honor of flipping the switch to illuminate the decorated tree, marking the start of the holiday season.
Sponsors, including Millennium Development, provided warm cocoa for attendees, while volunteers from the New York Road Runners helped the evening run smoothly. The NYC Mounted Auxiliary Unit added a magical touch with horses dressed in Christmas attire, adding a magical touch to the celebration.
The Friends of the Lott House expressed gratitude to everyone who came out to celebrate.
“This event is a cherished tradition in Marine Park, and we’re thrilled to see so many families braving the cold to join us,” a representative said.
The historic Lott House, built between 1720 and 1800, is a reminder of Brooklyn’s rural past and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Once described as “the finest home in all of Kings County,” the house now serves as a community hub for events that bring neighbors together.
Sinterklaas, the patron saint of children, added joy to the celebration with greetings and photo opportunities, connecting the community to its Dutch roots and the spirit of holiday giving.
