Borough President Markowitz stood in solidarity with Egypt’s pro-democracy protestors by raising the flag of the African nation over Borough Hall on Wednesday.
The demonstration of support was made in front of members of the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge, and the Arab-American and Egyptian-American communities of Brooklyn, which cheered as Markowitz raised the pennant — a red, white and black tricolor centered by the Eagle of Salafin, a symbol included in the national emblems of many Arab countries.
Markowitz championed the Jan. 25 uprising in the Muslim-majority nation, which ended on Feb. 11 with the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, drawing similarities between the Egyptian Revolution and the American War of Independence.
“The American Dream is now the Egyptian Dream,” said the borough president, adding that the sweeping rallies were proof that Egyptians wanted better lives for themselves and their families.
“They want the freedom to do all they can to reach the zenith of their God-given potential — just like in America,” he stated.
Brooklyn is home to the city’s second largest population of Egyptian Americans, mostly residing in Bay Ridge.
