Last year, the MetroTech Business Improvement District initiated a college scholarship program, in which they created a fund that provided 25 college scholarships of $1,000 each for high school graduating seniors who were going to attend colleges in Downtown Brooklyn.
The BID also formed a Board of Advisors comprised of local elected officials, including Borough President Marty Markowitz, Congressman Ed Towns, State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Assembly members Hakeem Jeffries, Joseph Lentol and Joan Millman and Councilmembers, Letitia James and David Yassky. The results of the program were successful and, as such, the Board of Directors of the BID has voted to continue the program at the same level as last year.
Eligible students must be graduating this year from Benjamin Bannaker, Brooklyn Friends School, Brooklyn International High School, Brooklyn High School for the Arts, Brooklyn Technical HS, George Westinghouse, Pacific High School, Science Skills Center, St. Joseph High School, Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice or the Urban Assembly School of Music and Art.
The number of awardees for each school will be based on the size of their graduating class. Each high school will select the winners based on academic achievement and school or community service. The students must attend a Downtown Brooklyn college including Institute of Design and Construction, Long Island University, New York City Technical College, Polytechnic University of NYU, Pratt Institute, St. Francis College or St. Joseph’s College. The program will be totally funded by the BID out of its assessment revenue.
