It may have been Cinco de Mayo in Brooklyn’s bars, but in Dyker Heights, on Eighth Avenue between 68th and 69th streets, it was Paskha — Greek Easter!
Spartan Souvlaki restaurant threw its seventh annual block party celebrating the Resurrection of Christ — which falls later on the calendar of the Greek Orthodox Church than on the Christian, or Gregorian calendar.
Eatery owner George Lykourezos and his staff roasted four lambs and two pigs, plus tons of shish kebabs and hot dogs. They also served up Greek beer and wine for some 500 attendees — all of it 100-percent free of charge.
“Everything’s on the house,” said Lykourezos. “And it’s all Greek food. That’s where we specialize. Nothing else is allowed.”
But Lykourezos did request a donation — not for himself, but for Third Avenue’s Guild for Exceptional Children, which cares for developmentally disabled people of all ages. This year, Lykourezos’s party raised about $3,000, which the gyro maker happily handed over to the 50-plus-year-old community group.
“To count the money and tell them what we got, that’s my favorite part,” Lykourezos said.
