New Children’s Museum

The newly expanded Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s daffodil yellow building will be bursting with hands-on activities, animal shows, and other special events in September as the grand opening fun continues.

Kids will see supersized beetles in Beetle Mania, make a carnival headdress in Discover the West Indies, whip up some fresh salsa in Viva la Salsa, and much more. See below for the September events schedule and general museum info. Events free with museum admission.

Calendar of Events

Beetle Mania, September 27, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. & 3-4 p.m. Come see this super-sized beetle species and find out how scientists track them. View beetle larva, conduct an insect experiment, and make a bug book to use while investigating the museum’s garden. Ages 5+

Discover the West Indies in Brooklyn, September 27, 2-3 p.m. Explore the vibrant cultures of the Caribbean that thrive in New York City today. Learn about the colorful costumes, masks, and headdresses of the spectacular Trinidad and Tobago carnival celebrations. View West Indian objects from the museum’s collection and make your own carnival headgear to wear home. Ages 5+.

Chase Wonder Why Workshop: Viva la Salsa, September 27-28 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. & 3-4 p.m. The museum’s garden is teeming with tomatoes and it’s time to make salsa. Discover the origins of this tasty topping and learn how to harvest vegetables straight from the vine. Use the vegetables you pick to make fresh salsa. Ages 5+.

Folk Arts ’n Tales: Polish Paper Cutting, September 28 from 1-2 p.m. Discover the Polish art of paper cutting, called wycinanki. Learn how patterns and symmetry are utilized to craft these delicate images. Hear a Polish folktale and use scissors to cut your own paper masterpiece. Ages 6+

X-plorers Club: African Masks and Amulets, September 28 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Examine a miniature mask carved by the Dan people of West Africa. Representing a spirit, this mask was made to protect its bearers on a long journey. Hear an African tale and make your own protective mask to take home. Ages 8+.

Free Friday Nights

The Special Grand Opening Free Friday Nights events run September 26 through October 24 from 5-8 p.m. and features lively performances, and fun hands-on family programs.

General Information

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 1-6 p.m. (Totally Tots opens 11 a.m.), and NYC public school holiday hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are closed on Thanksgiving.

The Special Grand Opening discount rate is $5 per person, and then becomes $7.50 per person starting December 1. Members and children under one year of age are free.
