New library for Madison High School

This library just turned a new page!

James Madison High School students and local leaders snipped the ribbon on their new state-of-the-art library on Nov. 21. The Midwood school’s previous, antiquated stacks couldn’t keep up with the pupil’s curious minds, and was in desperate need of a modern-day makeover, said Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D–Midwood).

“It was a pleasure to join the ribbon cutting ceremony for this impressive new library,” said Deutsch, who allocated $400,000 for the renovations. “I am excited to watch Madison High School students utilize these resources to develop and enhance their educational acumen.”

The new 21st-century library, also funded with $600,000 from Borough President Adams, includes new furniture, shelving, lighting, and Apple computers — all of which will help teachers lead their classes in both large-group settings and smaller, one-on-one tutoring sessions.

The space has already become a home away from home for Madison’s seniors gearing up for college, studying for countless exams, and when they ship off next fall, they will be ready, said the school’s principal.

“The library has created a ‘college-like’ atmosphere that makes the students of James Madison High School so proud,” said Jodie Cohen.

And the high school’s new college center, equipped with advisors to help students prep for college and navigate the stressful application process, is also housed in the newly renovated library, making it a real oasis for studying, said a spokesman for the school.

“At any time of the day, you can find students researching, studying and collaborating with one another in the library,” said Larry Melamed. “It has become a true center for learning.”

James Madison High School’s African Drumming troop, jazz band, and chorus all performed during the ribbon cutting ceremony.
