New York City College of Technology will host “Theatre for One,” a unique live performance by one actor for one audience member, December 3 from 12:30-6 p.m. in the Voorhees Theatre, 186 Jay Street (north of Tillary Street) in Downtown Brooklyn. Admission is free.
“Actually, each performance will be five minutes long with a five-minute transition between them, allowing for 24 unique performances,” explains City Tech’s Sue Brandt, assistant professor of entertainment technology. This means that 24 audience members will be treated to a private performance by one of three different performers in a booth set up on stage.
“The space creates an interdependent relationship, making each event a singularly intimate experience particular to the two people who share it,” Brandt says. “The caveat is only one person at a time gets the experience; we will be organizing a way for audience members to pre-sign-up for the individual experience.”
In addition to participating in these private performances, audience members will have the option of sitting in the theatre and watching them live from video screens.
Theatre for One, inspired by peepshow booths and confessionals, is the brainchild of Christine Jones, a freelance set designer whose recent projects include the Broadway show Spring Awakening, for which she won a Tony nomination; The Book of Longing, music by Philip Glass, poems by Leonard Cohen, for The Lincoln Center Festival; and The Onion Cellar, with music by The Dresden Dolls, at A.R.T.’s Zero Arrow Street.
The Theatre for One booth was designed by LOT-EK. Jones, along with LOT-EK, will be conducting a lecture/demo during the transitions between performances.
