Jazz drummer Andre Martinez shows that
he can easily trade one set of brushes for another with a Jan.
22 exhibition of his paintings in DUMBO.

Martinez, a Downtown Brooklyn native, played with the Cecil Taylor
Unit for more than a decade, and currently co-leads the band
Earth People. Yet the 49-year-old still has passion to spare
for painting and the exhibit at the Henry Gregg Gallery will
display 17 of the 200 paintings he has created in the last two
years, Martinez told GO Brooklyn.

Among the works on display will be "The Cherubim Will Save
God’s Waters" (pictured), an oil and acrylic on canvas.
Martinez said that he’s concerned about "the way humans
today are treating the water and the environment, but eventually
this will be in God’s hands."

The artist’s wife of 27 years, Lois Loren, is a jazz singer,
and she will perform at Saturday’s opening reception, which runs
from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Martinez is a co-owner of the gallery with Greg Principato, and
said that the partners plan to open a new show each month.

"There are so many great artists that need to be exposed,"
said Martinez.

The Henry Gregg Gallery is located at 111 Front St. at Washington
Street. For gallery hours and more information, call (718) 408-1090.
