When Public School 153 opened its doors in 1909, a new home cost under $3,000, astronomers sighted Pluto and the nation of Cuba became a republic.
One hundred years later, the cost of homes has skyrocketed, Pluto is no longer considered a planet and Cuba fails to exist as a republic – but Public School 153 remains in a class of its own.
Students and staffers joined well−wishers for a centennial celebration of the elementary school, 1970 Homecrest Avenue, featuring student presentations, a collection of memorabilia and guest addresses by alumni, including Brooklyn Councilmember Michael Nelson, Class of 1952, who took the assemblage on a trip down memory lane.
