Award-winning singer songwriter Hank Fellows was a big hit when he visited Public School 163 to serenade students and staffers with a medley of his popular tunes.

The New Yorker, best known for his songs about 9/11, performed for a rapt audience during an assembly which also served to hail youngsters with “Student of the Month” certificates in the auditorium of the school, 1664 Benson Avenue.

Fellows was living in New Jersey across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center when terrorists hijacked planes and struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Fellows, who witnessed the destructive aftermath, was compelled to write a love song about the grief-stricken nation, entitled, “The Spirit of America,” which he followed with another titled, “Halfway to Heaven.”

Since then, the songs have been performed in schools, churches and civic organizations throughout the country, including the Boy Scouts of America and the Salvation Army.

In addition, Fellows has donated hundreds of copies of his CDs and sheet music to teachers, who use his songs to uplift youngsters in troubling times.

The performer has received four popular music awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and a special achievement award at the Unisong International Song Contest.
