The Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum will host a free celebration of the Pinkster holiday with various family activities, May 17 from 12-4 p.m.
The day begins at 12 p.m. with a tour of the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum, 5816 Clarendon Road, emphasizing the relationships of the Dutch and Africans in colonial Brooklyn. At 1:15 p.m., Dr. Sherrill Wilson, will conduct an invigorating discussion about why African-Americans came to Brooklyn as slaves or freemen, and eventually rose to create their own town, Weeksville, in “Traveling the New York African-American Experience from 1637-1865.”
This program, free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities’ Speakers in the Humanities program.
From 1:30-3:30 p.m., enjoy the titillating aromas from an outdoor fire-pit, where open-hearth cooking will be demonstrated.
At 2:30 p.m., Ms. Akua Brabhan will conduct a children’s African dance class, then the children can perform for the crowd.
At 2 and 3:30 p.m., the Ecumenical Choir of Bedford-Stuyvesant will perform African-American songs. Finally, make a cornhusk doll or an herbal sachet throughout the day with your family to complete the experience.
