Wednesday is your chance to hold police accountable for a violent-crime spike that has been rocking Sunset Park.
Officials from the 72nd Precinct are holding a meeting to discuss crime in a section of the command immediately around the neighborhood’s eponymous park at the Sunset Park Senior Citizen Center on Aug. 24, police said.
“We’ll discuss crimes and conditions the public should be aware of,” said police officer Philip Buonora. “We encourage people to come and learn what’s going on in their neighborhood.”
Major crime has dipped in Brooklyn this year, but it is rising in the 72nd Precinct, which covers Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace, and South Slope — particularly an area bounded by Third and Seventh avenues and 55th and 36th streets police call Sector C.
A majority of the precinct’s crimes occur in the sector, and incidences are growing.
For instance, there were no murders by this time last year, but there have been four this year to date — and two of them occurred in Sector C, police data shows. Robbery, assault, and thefts over $1,000 are all on the rise precinct-wide compared to last year.
There have been fewer burglaries in the same span, and one fewer rapes at 13 this year versus 14 this time last year, according to police data.
Leading the meeting will be officers Buonora and Carmela Andersen, who are assigned to Sector C as part of the department’s so-called community policing model, which seeks to improve efficacy and resident-department relationships by slicing up precincts into four sections and assigning each a pair of officers to embed themselves with locals.
