Tanekeya Word will share her bold analysis of fashion, art and feminism with the vibrant, fast-paced exhibit “Popping: The Rebirth of Fresh” at The Gallery at Harriet’s Alter Ego, 293 Flatbush Avenue between St. Marks and Prospect places in Brooklyn.
An opening reception will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on May 18.
Word has taken pop art to high fashion runway status with her striking Donne Di lusso series: a confident line of artwork hailed as the meeting of pop art and Vogue couture.
Her Donne Di lusso paintings — meaning luxury women in Italian — celebrates the woman but parodies the concept of femininity based on societal standards of beauty, which stereotypically overwhelm females, young and old alike, with feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth as they aspire to these often unrealistic levels of perceived beauty.
