Greenpoint’s community leaders praised Michael Allocco of Allocco Recycling for his company’s generous $50,000 donation benefiting local organizations committed to creating and maintaining park space in the neighborhood.
Representatives from the Open Space Alliance, Community Board One, NYPIRG, Newtown Creek Alliance, Greenpoint Williamsburg Association of Parks and Planning, St. Nicholas NPC, and the Newtown Creek Monitoring Committee (NCMC) were on hand to congratulate Allocco, a scrap metal and construction roadway recycling company, for their work in the community.
The company wanted to create a park with many of these groups at North Henry Street near Greenpoint Avenue, but was held up due to administrative delays in the city.
“There was so much red tape to get that park,” Allocco said. “I felt badly that we didn’t get that park achieved so we wanted to do something for the community on their behalf.”
The Open Space Alliance accepted the funding on behalf of the community groups, which will receive disbursements for open space-related projects.
“This is a huge step forward for this neighborhood,” said Paul Turci, co-chair of NCMC.
