Road trip begins with a bad loss

Cyclones 3

Doubledays 4

Tuesday, Aug. 10 at Auburn

The Cyclones began a six-game road trip in depressing fashion, dropping a game that they should have won.

After Auburn jumped on starter Chris Hilliard with two runs on a homer in the first, the Cyclones stormed back, loading the bases in the fifth with no outs, but Luis Nieves grounded into a double play. It scored a run, but it killed the rally. Justin Schafer started it up again with an RBI double, but the team’s best hitter, Darrell Ceciliani, struck out.

In the next inning, Cory Vaughn singled and stole second, but was stranded.

After another Auburn run, William Cherry led off the seventh with a double, but only scored thanks to Nieves’s rally-killing SAC fly. It tied the score, but Auburn won it in the bottom of the frame on a solo shot off reliever Daniel Carela.
