With all the bumps and hollows on some roads, you might think you were on a roller coaster when you’re driving through Canarsie.
Indeed, while they’re not quite Space Mountain, 10 streets or intersections have been identified by one local elected official as being seriously in need of some TLC.
Assemblymember Alan Maisel wrote on May 6th to Janette Sadik-Khan, the commissioner of the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT), requesting an immediate study of Flatlands Avenue, between East 108th Street and Ralph Avenue, which he called the “most egregious” example of a street in the neighborhood requiring rehabilitation.
In addition, Maisel asked that a study be conducted of East 93rd Street, between Skidmore and Seaview avenues; Avenue K, between East 84th and East 87th streets; Paerdegat Avenue North, between Flatlands and Seaview avenues; East 92nd Street, between Flatlands and Conklin avenues; East 80th Street, between Flatlands Avenue and avenue K; Avenue K between Rockaway Parkway and East 95th street; East 101st Street between Avenue N and Seaview Avenue; Seaview Avenue between East 99th and East 100th streets; and the intersection of Canarsie Road, Skidmore Avenue and St. Jude Place.
“I am sure you realize that Flatlands Avenue is a very busy commercial strip and is often overcrowded with not only cars, but trucks and buses, which has added to its deterioration,” Maisel wrote, requesting that, after the study, DOT, “schedule those in the most need for immediate re-paving.”
Craig Chin, a spokesperson for DOT, told this paper that, “East 78th Street is scheduled for reconstruction this fiscal year. We do have several other streets in the area we would like to combine into a separate project in the future, including East 80th Street from Flatlands to Seaview, and Avenue J between East 80th and East 84th Street.”
Maisel assembled the list of streets in need of repair after he and staff members roamed through the neighborhood identifying streets that looked significantly deteriorated.
He is also asking Canarsie residents to inform him of locations they are aware of, by calling his office at 718-968-2770.
