Grimebusting Boy Scouts from St. Edmund’s Parish in Sheepshead Bay helped tranform an eyesore into a sight for sore eyes by sprucing up the Salt Marsh Nature Center for Earth Day.
Green−thumbed youngsters from Troop, Pack and Venturing Crew 238 in Sheepshead Bay polished up on the elbow grease and planted Jupiter grasses, plus an assortment of flowers, as part of the eco−friendly salute to Mother Nature, which also featured a performance by the Brooklyn Dance Center entitled, “Birth of Elements.”
An added distinction? The unit was the only one in Brooklyn to beautify the wildlife refuge, East 33rd Street and Avenue U, by landscaping its grounds, said Venturing Crew Adviser Ray Torres, adding, “We had our own personal own trash truck from the Parks Department.”
The day of community service, supervised by Torres and Scoutmaster David Migdal, was conducted in conjunction with the New York City Department of Enviornmental Protection and the Parks Department.
Established by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 as an environmental education forum, Earth Day is celebrated during spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
